Deserts are hot lands with an extremely hot environment where plants and animals go under severe transformation to survive in such conditions. They adapt to their surrounding.

There are mainly four types of deserts:

    1. Hot and Dry Deserts.

    2. Semi-Arid Deserts.

    3. Coastal Deserts.

    4. Cold Deserts.

The ecosystem of desert covers approximately one-fifth of the Earth’s surface. This ecosystem has a layer of soil that can be sandy, gravelly, or stony which will depend on the desert. Deserts generally get 50 centimeters of rainfall a year on average, and the organisms that live in deserts are adapted to this extremely dry climate.

Plants in deserts have adaptations to conserve water. For example, cactus has enlarged stems to store water, and long spines to protect themselves from animals. Animals are also adapted to survive in the desert: For eg: A black-tailed jackrabbit has extra-long ears which help it to transfer out excess heat from its body.

So let’s discuss the four types of deserts. They are:

    1. Hot and Dry Deserts: In hot and dry deserts, also called arid deserts, the temperatures are warm and dry for a whole year. Some famous arid deserts are the Sahara Desert and the Mojave Desert.

<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>2. Semi-Arid Deserts: Semi-arid deserts are cooler than arid deserts. The long, dry summers are followed immediately by winters with some rain. Some Semi-arid deserts are located in North America, Asia, Europe, and Greenland.

    3. Coastal Deserts: Coastal deserts are more humid than other types of deserts. In this desert, Rainfall is rare though heavy fog blows in from the coast. The Atacama Desert is the best example of a coastal desert.

    4. Cold Deserts: Cold deserts are dry and have extremely low temperatures in comparison to the other types of deserts. For example The Antarctic.
