    Begum Hazrat Mahal name was Muhammad and she was born in Faizabad in 1820. She was a courtesan by profession and her parents sold her to the royal harin as khwasin. After that somehow she became begam of nawab Wajid Ali Shah after being accepted as a royal concubine. At awadh (Lucknow) the revolt of 1875 was led by Begum Hazrat Mahal, the wife of deposed ruler Wajid Ali Shah. Lucknow became a point of the Revolt for more than 8 months. Sepoys, peasants, talukdar and chiefs supported Begum Hazrat Mahal in the revolt. Maulvi ahmadullah and Begum Hazrat Mahal inspired the sepoys. Birjis Qadr, son of ousted nawab, was declared the new nawab after long struggle the, the sepoys failed to oust the British. Unfortunately she has to retreat to Nepal where first she was refused to stay but then she was allowed to stay. She died there in 1879 7th April aged 59 in Kathmandu, Nepal. Was buried in a nameless grave in the ground of Kathmandu jama masjid.
