Reply To: What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a process in which the ionic compounds decompose themselves into their elemental form by passing direct electric current through compound in fluid form. The anions get oxidized at anode and the cations get reduced at cathode. Electrolysis is a process that takes place in electrolytic cell containing two electrodes namely, Cathode and Anode. These electrodes are connected to a direct source and then, the ionic compound undergoes decomposition in suitable solvent in molten or dissolved form.

In the process of electrolysis, there is an interchange of ions and atoms due to the addition or removal of electrons from the external circuit. The neutral atom, if solid, is deposited on the cathode and if gas, move upwards. This is a reduction process and the cation is, reduced at the cathode.
