In arithmetics, the ratio is defined by the relative size of two objects. The ratio can be expressed by using the symbols “:” or “/”. Precisely we can say that the comparison of two quantities of the same kind is referred to as the Ratio.

Note:

1. The ratio should exist between the quantities of the same kind

2. The units should be similar while comparing two things,

3. There should be significant order of terms

4. The comparison of two ratios can be done if the ratios are equivalent.

Example 1:

Out of the total students in a class, if the number of boys is 4 and the number of girls being 7, then find the ratio between girls and boys.

Solution: The ratio between girls and boys can be written as 4:7 (Girls: Boys).

The ratio can also be written in the form of a factor like 4/7.

Example 2:

Two numbers are in the ratio 4: 5. If the sum of numbers is 63, find the numbers.

Solution: Given, 4/5 is the ratio of any two numbers.

Let the two numbers be 4x and 5x.

As per the given question,

4x + 5x = 63

9x = 63

x = 7

Hence, the two numbers are;

4x = 4 x 7 = 28

and

5x = 5 x 7 = 35

28 and 35 are the required numbers.
