Reply To: What are “villi”?

In anatomy, villi are small finger like vascular projections found attached to the membrane of any organ or passage in the body. It helps in increasing the surface area of the membrane. These are found in the placental villi, mucous membrane having the intestinal villi. Intestinal villi are present on the surface of the small intestine. It increases the surface area of the small intestine and helps in digestion and absorption of food nutrients. These absorb protein molecules and transfer it to the tissues. The nutrients absorbed through the villi are transported into the blood stream which in turn are used by the body.
