The term Independence means freedom. The state of being totally free and not been controlled by anyone. It is the condition when nobody can run their powers on you. It can be defined in terms of a person, or a country.
Let us take the example of India’s Independence. Every country wants to be independent and want to take their decisions on their own and not under any other nation’s pressure. India got independent on 15th August 1947. It has been nearly 74 years of India’s Independence. Independence Day is celebrated on 15th August every year to commemorate the nation’s independence from the United Kingdom. On 15th August 1947, Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, raised the Indian National flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort at Delhi. Thereafter, on every Independence Day, the Prime Minister hoists the flag and addresses the nation. Thie entire event is broadcasted by Doordarshan and many people visit the place on that day. Those who cannot visit watch the Prime Minister raising the flag on Doordarshan.
Though we do celebrate Independence Day, but we need to ask ourselves this question, Are the women of this country independent? Are they allowed to do whatever they want? Have they got independence or it is just the males who have got independence? Independence is important for everyone. We need to make the women of this country independent. They cannot move on the roads safely. Every time a girl goes out at night, her parents get worried. They cannot sleep in peace when their daughter is out. Women in this country don’t feel safe even after 74 years of India’s Independence. We need to take some measures so that they feel safe and their parents don’t need to worry about them. A country’s Independence is measured by all of its citizens’ freedom.
