The Indian Air Force is the air wing of the Indian Armed Forces. The complement of personnel and aircraft assets is ranked fourth amongst the air forces of the world. It was officially inaugurated on 8th October 1932. The mission of the Indian Air Force is to protect its citizens from any foreign aggression from any other country. Also, the sole mission is to secure Indian airspace and to handle aerial warfare during armed conflict.
After India gained independence from the United Kingdom, the name Royal Indian Air Force was kept. And when India became a Republic nation, the prefix Royal was removed and from then we call it Indian Air Force.
Since 1950, the Indian Air Force has been involved in four major wars with the neighboring countries Pakistan and China. Some other major operations undertaken by the Indian Air Force include Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot, Operation Cactus, and Operation Poomalai.
The position of the Supreme Commander of the Indian Air Force is handled by the President of India. The Chief of Air Staff is mainly responsible for the operational leadership of the Air Force. The rank of Marshal of the Air Force had once been bestowed by the President of India to Arjan Singh. On 26th January, Arjan Singh became the one and only five star rank officer of the Indian Air Force.
The Indian Air Force bears the accountability of safeguarding Indian airspace and thus the national interests in association with the other branches of the Armed Forces in India. The Indian Air Force have highly trained crew, pilots, and access to modern military assets along with the capacity to provide rapid response evacuation rescue operations. and the delivery of relief supplies to some affected areas of the country. The IAF also provide extensive assistance to people during natural calamities like the Gujarat cyclone in the year 1998, the Tsunami in 2004, etc.
