Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was the full name of ‘Mahatma Gandhi.’ On October 2, 1869, he was born in Porbandar, Gujarat, India. He traveled to England for further study after clearing the Matriculation Exam. Gandhiji earned his legal degree in England and returned to India in 1893. He began his profession as a lawyer. He spent a considerable amount of his life in London, where he completed his schooling. Even in London, Gandhiji had amassed a sizable following for his teachings and beliefs.
In June of 1891, he completed his first verdict. After finishing his schooling, he returned to India for two years. However, these two years were quite difficult for him. He stayed in his home state of Gujarat and practiced law there. For several years in India, he was unable to obtain a valid license. He was unable to establish a thriving legal practice.
Mahatma Gandhi symbolized an Indian Merchant Navy, which is why he is in South Africa. He settled in and began researching civil rights activities. During this time, he vigorously educated himself in the fields of justice and civil rights. He was the first person in India to utilize terms like Swadeshi and Purna Swaraj.
His most notable activities are the non-cooperation campaign in 1920, the civil disobedience movement in 1939, the Dandi March to protest the Salt Act, and, most notably, the Quit India movement in 1942. Gandhiji was a firm believer in nonviolent ideals. He also encourages and empowers women to participate in the liberation movement.
He was arrested and imprisoned several times, but this did not deter him from his ardent desire to see India get independence; India gained independence on August 15, 1947. But he didn’t get to enjoy his freedom for long since Nathuram Godse shot him dead on January 30, 1948.
