The first war of Indian independence, also known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857 or the Sepoy Mutiny, took place during the period of British colonial rule in India. It began on May 10, 1857, and lasted until June 1858. The rebellion started with a mutiny by sepoys (Indian soldiers) in the British East India Company’s army but quickly spread to various parts of northern and central India. It was a significant event in Indian history and marked a turning point in the Indian independence movement against British rule.
