The Earth has got some natural resources. We need to use them carefully and conserve them for future generations. Water is one of the most important natural resources available to us. World Water Day is celebrated on 22nd March every year. It is a reminder to us to save water and ensure its availability for future generations.
Sustainable Water Management
Sustainable water management means utilizing the available water in a manner by which the current, economic, and social needs are met without compromising on future needs. It ensures with proper planning that the water needs are fulfilled irrespective of climate change, drought, or excessive
rainfall.
Out of the total availability of water to us, 3% is freshwater and 97% is seawater.
Sources of water
1. Groundwater
It is a highly sustainable water resource. 98% of groundwater is naturally sourced.
2. Surface water
Surface water consists of water from rivers, lakes, or ponds. This water is not safe to drink without treatment due to the increased levels of pollution.
3. Seawater
Desalination is in force where fresh water is lacking. But has some drawbacks like expensive procedures, more energy utilisation, and increased emissions.
Utilisation of water
1. Agriculture
In agriculture maximum fresh water is utilized. Approximately 80% of the global water is utilized for this.
2. Industry
Water is utilized in almost all industries for processes like washing, cleaning, diluting, etc. Approximately 20% of the global water is utilized by industries.
3. Domestic
Almost 10% of global water usage is for household needs.

It is crucial to conserve water to ensure its availability for future generations. It will require advanced technology and a huge amount of investment. Practices like water recycling should be imposed to achieve the availability of this natural resource.
