A reflexive verb is a type of verb in which the subject and the object of the action are the same. In other words, the action of the verb is performed by the subject on itself. Reflexive verbs are often used to describe actions that individuals perform on themselves, such as personal care routines or actions that involve self-involvement.

In English, reflexive verbs are formed by using reflexive pronouns (such as “myself,” “yourself,” “himself,” “herself,” “itself,” “ourselves,” “yourselves,” “themselves”). For example:

    • “I wash myself.”
    • “She dresses herself.”
    • “They enjoyed themselves at the party.”

In some other languages, such as Spanish or French, reflexive verbs have specific conjugations and often require reflexive pronouns to be placed before or attached to the verb. For example, in Spanish, “lavarse” means “to wash oneself,” and you would say “Me lavo” (I wash myself).

Overall, reflexive verbs help to express actions where the subject and object are the same entity, emphasizing the self-directed nature of the action.
