In fact, the term “man’s best friend” appeared in the American Supreme Court in 1870 when a talented lawyer named George Graham Vest defended a man who loved his coon hound, the Old Drum. Vest said that when a neighbor killed an Old Drum for trespassing, the neighbor took the life of just more than an animal – killing an important family member.
Vest was famous for saying, “The perfect, unselfish friend anyone can have in this selfish world – the one who is neither ungrateful or deceitful – is his dog.”
Dogs have often shown themselves to be honest, kind, understanding, and invincible. They greeted us warmly after a day that would be the worst day of our lives and made us feel better by moving their tails and playful smiles.
Whether they are herding sheep, hunting a game, supporting people with disabilities, or simply working as a partner unlike any other, dogs help people with daily tasks, many of which are impossible without them. Going back to the 16th century, dogs came to serve as helpers for the blind, and in the 1970’s, dog trainers developed dog techniques to help people with disabilities.
As if those activities were not enough, dogs also help to prevent possible crimes and save lives, such as in cases of drug sniffing and bombings. German herdsmen, a 200-year-old breeder, are often seen working as canine police around the world.
