A domain name is a unique, human-readable address that is used to identify and locate websites on the internet. It serves as a memorable and easy-to-use way for users to access specific websites or online services.
A domain name consists of two main parts: the top-level domain (TLD) and the second-level domain (SLD). The TLD is the part that appears to the right of the dot, such as .com, .org, or .net. The SLD is the part that appears to the left of the dot and is chosen by the owner of the domain name.
For example, in the domain name “example.com,” “example” is the SLD, and “.com” is the TLD. The combination of the SLD and TLD creates a unique address that can be used to access a specific website.
Domain names are registered through domain registrars, which are companies authorized by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to manage the registration of domain names. When a domain name is registered, the owner gains the exclusive rights to use that domain name for a specific period, usually ranging from one to ten years, depending on the registration agreement.
In addition to websites, domain names can also be used for email addresses, online applications, and other internet services. They provide a user-friendly way to access online resources without needing to remember complex IP addresses, which are the numerical addresses used by computers to identify each other on the internet.
