The proverb “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” was associated with Saint Ambrose. The proverb to adapt to the situation. Wherever you go, you have to follow their customs and traditions.

There is a story behind this proverb coming up. One day, Saint Monica along with her son was visiting Rome on Saturday. They observed that Saturday was observed as a fast day in Rome whereas this was not so in Milan, the place where they lived. They discussed the issue with Saint Ambrose who then replied that when he is in Milan, he doesn’t fast on Saturday, but when he is in Rome, he keeps a fast on Saturday. This reply is the reason behind the famous proverb “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”.

Whenever you are at a place you are not familiar with, you should always follow their traditions and do as they say. When we visit a temple, it is known to all of us that we have to remove our slippers and worship God. People will consider us made if we don’t remove our slippers and do whatever and however we want to in a temple. On the other hand, if you visit a church, there is a different tradition that you need to follow there. Light a candle and worship God in a different way is the custom that is followed at a church. When you go for an outing, you may wear whatever you like, like shorts or jeans. But when you are going to attend a marriage, you don’t wear shorts. That is the custom that we follow.

The phrase simply means adapting to the place and the situation where you are. You just need to adjust yourself at the respective place accordingly. Following the customs of a place is always considered healthy.
