Every year on January 26th, Republic Day is observed. This day is commemorated with zeal and pride across India. The Indian Constitution went into force on this day. It commemorates the day when India achieved true independence and the momentous Purna Swaraj. On January 26, 1950, about three years after independence, we were an independent, secular, socialist, democratic republic country.

Republic Day is historically significant. We gained independence from the British on 15 August 1947, but we had no system of government, constitution, or political parties. India enacted the Constitution on January 26, 1950. On January 26, 1930, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was elected President of the Indian National Congress, and Poorna Swaraj was announced. However, we gained freedom on August 15, 1947.

Following independence, a special constituent assembly was formed to draught the Indian Constitution. The constitution-drafting committee was chaired by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Other countries’ constitutions were also consulted when developing India’s constitution to build the finest constitution possible. The Indian Constitution was eventually drafted after 166 days.

It was designed in such a way that all Indian people may have equal rights in terms of religion, culture, caste, gender, and creed. The Indian Constitution was established and enacted on January 26, 1950, and the day is known as Republic Day. Furthermore, it commemorates the end of British control and the establishment of India as a Republic State.

This day is celebrated with zeal and enjoyment by the people. On Rajpath in New Delhi, the President of India raises the national flag. The national anthem is then played, followed by a 21-gun salute. People from all across the country go to the Rajpath to see the big Republic Day extravaganza. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the first President to participate in the flag-raising event.

The festival is widely celebrated in schools, universities, government agencies, and private organizations. Along with the other events, a march past and a parade are held in schools. Many schools give out candy to pupils. People celebrate the spirit of freedom while ignoring differences such as caste, religion, language, and culture.
