Shivaji was born in Poona in 1627. Shahji Bhonsle, his father, was a Jagirdar. He was working for the King of Bijapur. Bijapur was Shivaji’s home. Shivaji’s schooling was placed in the hands of a Brahmin called Dadaji. Shivaji was the founder of India’s Maratha Empire. After Muslim dominance, he was the first Hindu to build a Hindu empire.
Jija Bai, his mother, was a devout Muslim woman. Shivaji inherited the best aspects of his personality from her. He was unable to learn to read and write.
But he honed his skills in a variety of masculine pursuits. He was a master of riding and the skills of war and battle when he was young. Dadaji used to read the Ramayana and Mahabharata stories to him. He was full of patriotism since childhood.
He was greatly influenced by accounts of Mughal monarchs’ deeds of violence towards Hindus. He resolved to liberate his homeland from the Mughals’ brutal rule. He began his job with the assistance of his tiny army of hillmen. He began by capturing various forts and districts in the state of Bijapur. Finally, the Sultan of Bijapur dispatched General Afzal Khan to apprehend him.
In a secret meeting, Afzal Khan attempted to assassinate him, but Shivaji remained vigilant. With his bakhna, he killed Afzal Khan and defeated the army of Bijapur. He made peace with the King of Bijapur. He began to dispute with Auranghzeb at this point. Shaista Khan and other Generals were dispatched by Aurangzeb to apprehend Shivaji.
Shivaji organized a marriage celebration of his courageous men and stormed Shaista Khan’s residence. Shaista Khan managed to get away with only one finger missing. Raja Jai Singh urged Shivaaji to travel to Agra and make peace with Aurangzeb, but Aurangzeb arrested him and his son.
He arrived at Rajgarh after being released from Aurangzeb’s captivity. He declared war against the Mughal monarch.
He was able to reclaim the forts that he had ceded to Aurangzeb. He was then anointed King of Rajgarh in 1674. At the age of fifty-three, he died in 1690.
