Pamulaparti Venkata Narasimha Rao, commonly known as PV Narasimha Rao, was an Indian lawyer and politician who got elected as the 9th Prime Minister of India. He was the second holder of this office from a non-Hindi-speaking region and the first from South India. He was born on 28th June 1921.

PV Narasimha Rao is usually referred to as the “Father of Indian Economic Reforms.” He was responsible for the dismantling of the Licence Raj, as it came under the purview of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, thereby reversing the socialist policies of Rajiv Gandhi’s government. These socialist acts were continued even during future Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh’s reign. PV Narasimha Rao employed Manmohan Singh as his Finance Minister. With Rao’s support, Dr. Manmohan Singh propelled India’s globalization angle of the reforms that achieved the International Monetary Fund policies to retain the almost bankrupt nation from economic collapse. When Rao headed a minority government, he steered through the economic and political legislation. For this act, he was appreciated by giving the name Chanakya.

Narasimha Rao’s term as the Prime Minister of India was an eventful one in Indi’s history. A paradigm shift from industrializing, the mixed economic model of Jawaharlal Nehru to a market-driven model was his major accomplishment as the Prime Minister. During his reign as the Prime Minister, there was the birth of the Bhartiya Janta Party as an alternative to the Indian National Congress which was more famous in India as it had governed India for most of its post-Independence history. Rao’s term also saw the destruction of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, which triggered one of the worst Hindu-Muslim riots in the history of India since its independence.

Rao was a talented thinker who had interests in various subjects like literature and computer software.
