Women empowerment may be defined as, women’s sense of self- worth; their right to have and to determine choices, and their right to have a access to opportunities and resources. It’s main objective is to raise the self esteem and self confidence of women.Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.

Every day,in our country, women are confronted by discrimination and inequality. They face violence, abuse and unequal treatment at home, work and in their wider communities and are denied to opportunities to learn, earn and lead.Women from the majority of those living in poverty, have fewer resources, less power and less influence compared to men ,and can experience further inequality because of their class, ethnicity and age.Nearly two thirds of the world’s 781 million illiterate adults are women ,a proportion that has remained unchanged for two decades.Women have suffered a lot through the years, they were treated as almost non-existent in the earlier centuries.

Great social reformers in the past like Raja Ram Mohan Roy,Swami Vivekananda etc abolished ghastly practices like sati and child marriage and worked relentlessly in the past for the upliftment of women.Women empowerment is essential as with higher literacy rates and equal pay for equal work, women are able to thrive economically and rise out of poverty.Protecting women and girls from violence and abuse while challenging the stigmas against reporting crimes would overall create a much safer society.

Positive changes are now visible and the patriarchal system of society has been gradually eroding. Women are now claiming the socio-political rights for themselves. The successive governments have implemented various constitutional and legal rights to help women lead purposeful and meaningful lives. There is an increasing awareness about women’s rights which is evident in the emergence of several NGOs and self-help groups. At the individual level too, women are now breaking the shackles of suppression and making their voices heard for their rights.Although we have moved towards women empowerment, there is still a long way ahead.
