A fraction greater than 1 is called an improper fraction. In an improper fraction:

    • The numerator (top number) is greater than the denominator (bottom number).
    • For example, 5/3 is an improper fraction because 5 is greater than 3.

Improper fractions can be converted to mixed numbers:

    • A mixed number consists of a whole number part and a fractional part.
    • To convert an improper fraction to a mixed number:
      • Divide the numerator by the denominator.
      • The result is the whole number part.
      • The remainder becomes the new numerator, and the denominator stays the same.
    • For example, 5/3 converts to 1 2/3 (1 whole and 2/3 fractional part).

Improper fractions are useful when performing operations like addition and multiplication with fractions. They avoid the need to borrow or carry between the whole number and fractional parts.
