The identification of Sandrokottos with Chandragupta Maurya is credited to the Greek historian and ambassador to the Mauryan court, Megasthenes. Megasthenes was appointed as the Seleucid ambassador to the court of Chandragupta Maurya in Pataliputra (modern-day Patna, India) during the 4th century BCE. In his work called “Indica,” Megasthenes described the governance, society, and military of the Mauryan Empire. Megasthenes referred to Chandragupta Maurya as “Sandrokottos.” His writings played a crucial role in identifying Sandrokottos with Chandragupta Maurya in later historical accounts.
