The development of the first computer is credited to various individuals and advancements in computing technology over time. The concept of a programmable computing machine can be traced back to the early 19th century, but the first fully functional general-purpose computer is generally considered to be the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC).

ENIAC was developed by John W. Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. It was completed in 1945 and unveiled to the public in 1946. ENIAC was an enormous machine that used vacuum tubes for processing and had limited programmability. It was primarily designed for performing complex calculations required for scientific and military purposes.

It’s worth noting that there were earlier mechanical and electromechanical computing devices, such as the Analytical Engine designed by Charles Babbage in the 1830s and 1840s. However, these machines were not fully realized during Babbage’s time and were not built until much later.

So, while ENIAC is often considered the first modern electronic computer, the evolution of computing technology involved numerous contributions from various individuals and teams over several decades.
