🌟India’s physiographic divisions are characterized by diverse landforms, ranging from the Himalayan mountain range in the north to the Deccan Plateau in the south. These divisions play a important role in shaping the country’s geography, climate, and ecosystems.
1. The Northern Mountains:🏔️
This division includes the Himalayan mountain range, which are spread across the northern borders of India. It comprises three parallel ranges – the Greater Himalayas, Lesser Himalayas, and the Outer Himalayas.
2. The Northern Plains:🏞️
The South of the Himalayas lie in the extensive Northern Plains. They are formed by the sedimentation of the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra river systems. These fertile plains are important for agriculture. The terrain is relatively flat which can be used for external agricultural activities.
3. The Peninsular Plateau:⛰️
This plateau region is also known as the Deccan Plateau. It is situated between the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats. It is a vast elevated plateau with a variety of landscapes including hills, plateaus, and valleys. The Deccan Plateau is rich in minerals and has numerous rivers which contribute to agriculture.
4. The Indian Desert:🏜️
In the northwest part of India, the Thar Desert forms a distinct physiographic division. It is a hot desert with arid conditions, containing sand dunes and sparse vegetation. The Luni River is the only significant river in this region.
5. The Coastal Plains:🌊🛶
India has two distinct coastal plains – the Western Coastal Plain along the Arabian Sea and the Eastern Coastal Plain along the Bay of Bengal. These plains are narrow in the west but wider in the east. The Western Coastal Plain is known for its picturesque landscapes while the Eastern Coastal Plain is more extensive and includes the delta regions of major rivers.
6. The Islands:🏝️
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal and the Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea constitute India’s island territories. These islands have unique ecosystems with diverse flora and fauna and are important for strategic and environmental reasons
