The Red Fort in Delhi was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the mid-17th century. Construction began in 1638 when Shah Jahan decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi, and it was completed in 1648.Shah Jahan commissioned the construction of the massive red sandstone fort along the Yamuna River. The fort’s design is credited to architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori, who also constructed the Taj Mahal. The Red Fort was originally referred to as “Qila-i-Mubarak” (the blessed fort), as it was the residence of the Mughal royal family. The Red Fort represents the high point of Mughal architecture under Shah Jahan, combining Persian palace architecture with Indian traditions. It remains one of India’s most iconic monuments and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007.
