Stagnant water refers to standing or still water that does not flow or circulate. It can be found in various natural or artificial settings such as ponds, lakes, ditches, or containers. Stagnant water can accumulate when there is a lack of movement or when the water source is obstructed, preventing proper flow and circulation. Due to the absence of circulation, stagnant water often lacks oxygen and may become depleted in dissolved oxygen levels, making it less suitable for many forms of aquatic life.
The lack of movement and oxygenation in stagnant water can create an environment conducive to the growth of certain organisms such as algae, bacteria, and mosquitoes. This leads to health risks as it becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can carry diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, etc.
