Huge trees with thick canopies or foliage coverings are known as canopy trees or shade trees. According to the University of Minnesota, the canopy trees of a rainforest make up the uppermost layer of leaf coverings and are made up of the largest and oldest trees. Canopy trees thrive in a variety of environments, including rainforests, and provide shade and other benefits. Oaks, birches, crepe myrtles, elms, ashes, and other canopy trees are some of the most well-known.

The leaf of canopy trees is smooth and circular, ending in a point. These trees are close together, producing a thick roof over lower-level plants. According to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, this roof is not solid, but rather porous. Canopy branches and leaves absorb and deflect sunlight that falls to the ground, allowing only a little amount of light to pass through the foliage. Lower areas of a forest appear greenish and gloomy as a result. Greenery that is dense and enveloping also helps to darken the interior of the canopy.
