More water flows to the seas from glaciers and ice caps as temperatures increase and ice melts, and ocean water warms and increases in volume. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, this combination of events has played a substantial part in raising average worldwide sea level between four and eight inches (10 and 20 cm) in the last hundred years (IPCC).

Sea levels have risen and decreased dramatically over Earth’s 4.6-billion-year history, according to scientists. However, the recent pace of global sea level rise deviates from the normal rate of the previous two to three thousand years and is increasing at a faster rate—roughly one-tenth of an inch per year. A continuation or acceleration of that trend could result in dramatic changes to the world’s coasts.
