Distance and displacement are two terms that appear to be interchangeable but have quite different meanings and definitions. The term “distance” refers to “how much ground an object has traversed during its motion,” whereas “displacement” refers to “how far the object has travelled from its initial position.”

What is the definition of distance?

The overall path travelled by an object, regardless of direction, is referred to as distance. We can define distance as the amount of ground covered by an item, regardless of its starting or ending position.

The term “displacement” refers to a shift in an object’s position. It’s a vector quantity with a magnitude and a direction. It’s depicted as an arrow pointing from the beginning place to the destination. For instance, if an object moves from location A to location B, its position changes. Displacement is the term for a shift in an object’s position.
