There is a strong disagreement on the theory of evolution in the United States. On the other hand, the scientific community views evolution as an unifying force in the field of biology, with sufficient supporting evidence that evolution is a scientific fact. On the other hand, there is a long-held view that evolution is a fact, both modern and historical. This dichotomy has been the focus of recent months, as Science (25 June 1999) was making great strides in evolutionary science and the Kansas Board of Education decided (August 1999) that it no longer needed evolution as part of their academic school. Such comparisons underscore the immense challenge with regard to publicizing science. The significance of this challenge is underscored in a recent NAS report, Teaching about Evolution and Nature of Science (1998, National Academy Press, Washington, DC), a key recommendation that evolution be important in school subjects if students – the public for the future – should understand biology.

In fact, a clear understanding of evolutionary biology is essential for experts in all fields of biology if they are to move forward within the boundaries of their fields. Current research efforts to deepen knowledge on the genetic basis of complex characters, recent advances in morphology development, and efforts to produce a complete phylogenetic medicine all depend on the understanding of evolution. Evolution biology also contributes to the progressive development of the human race and the human family. Finally, there has been a long-standing interaction between the theory of evolution and non-biological fields such as mathematics, economics, and arithmetic.
