India: Land of Festivals

For us Indians, festivals are a major part of our lives. For us, a festival means joy, happiness, food, worship, new clothes, celebration, and many more things. All the religions of our country have certain festivals which are also celebrated by the whole coutry. A muslim can been seen firing crackers on diwali and playing with colour on holi. A Hindu can be seen celebrating Eid and going to each other’s house on Eid. A Punjabi can be seen celebrating Christmas, and a Christian can be seen going to Gurudwara for Lohri. India is known as the country of festivals. All the festivals have their own story behind them with actually happened in tha past. Like in hindu culture we have dusshera which is of 10 days. It is associated with the victory of lord rama over the demon Ravan and how he saved Sita Maata from him. We have diwali which is celebrated because on that very day lord rama along with brother lakshmana and wife sita came back to homeland after exile of 14 years. In muslim culture, Eid-al-Adha is celebrated to recall the story of how God commanded Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as a test of faith. Eid al-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of the 10th month in the Islamic calendar. Eid al-Adha is celebrated on the 10th day of the final month in the Islamic calendar. There is a festival called Eid al-Fitr celebrated after a month of prayer, devotion, and self-contro., Muslims celebrate the accomplishment of their sacred duties during Ramadan with the beginning of Eid-al-Fitr or the festival of Breaking the Fast. The festival is a national holiday in many countries with large Muslim populations. The most famous festival of christians ie, christmas is celebrated to remember lord jesus who is believed to be the son of god. In Punjabi culture, people celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called guruparab, to remember their first sikh guru, Nanak Dev Ji.

We live in the land of festivals. Yes, our country, India, has 29 states, and each state has its rituals and practices. Indian festivals have their importance and glory. Talking from the beginning in January, the first festival, which is widely celebrated, is on 14th January as Makar Sankranti in north east India, pongal in South India, magha saaji in Himachal, uttaryam in Gujarat, poush barbon in west bengal, khichdi in bihar and jharkhand. What this implies is one festival with so many names, and we all celebrate with brotherhood. There is always unity in diversity in our country  In February we celebrate festival of love generally called as “valentine’s day” .We share our love, are and, respect with each other after that it’s time for one of my favourite festival, yes festival of colours – holi  Next to this, Eid Mubarak is celebrated all across the country. After having fast “roza” for one whole month, we celebrate Eid.

In August-September, Ganesh Chaturthi is widely celebrated in over India but most popularly in Maharashtra. We worship lord Ganesha for 10 days. Dusshera is also celebrated for 10 days. In this, we worship Maa Durga, and on the 10th day, we celebrate Vijayadasham. It is believed that on this day, lord Ram killed Ravaana. After, hat we celebrate Diwali or Deepawali, festival of lights. People light candles and dias, decorate their homes, and worship Maa Laxmi and Ganesha. Chatth Puja is also celebrated after Deepawali in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand. Truly, India is the land of festivals. We celebrate countless number of festivals  I cannot explain each of them in a short note.

But every festival has a message and reason behind it , why we should celebrate it . Festival teachers us to live our life with happiness . We should respect each other. We should always believe in unity in diversity . We should spread love , care and respect to everyone.
