Common Suffixes and Their Meanings

Suffix What It Means Example Word
-ful Full of, having the qualities of joyful, helpful
-less Without, missing something fearless, hopeless
-ness A state or quality of being happiness, kindness
-ment The act or process of doing something; a result payment, enjoyment
-able/-ible Can be done; worthy of breakable, visible
-er A person who does something; used to compare teacher, faster
-or A person who does something actor, inventor
-ion/-tion The act or process of action, celebration

Teacher’s Tip:

Watch out for spelling changes when adding suffixes!

  • Drop the Silent E: hope + ful = hopeful (we drop the ‘e’)
  • Change Y to I: happy + ness = happiness (we change ‘y’ to ‘i’)
