” Rumours and prophecies played a part in moving people to action in the revolt of 1857″. Explain.
The revolt of 1857
The revolt of 1857 also know as Sepoy mutiny was breakout in May, at Meerut, because of the rumours of the new Enfild rifles which were introduced to the Muslim and Hindu soldiers by the East India company, it was said that the cartridges of the rifles were coated with the cows and pigs fats and that the cartidges had to be load into the rifles by biting off. This was against the Hindu and muslim soldiers as biting off means that the cartidges had to be consumed, which would destroy their religious practices; hence, their sentiments were hurt. This rumour was spread extensively like a fire in the forest, and also that the British were intentionally trying to corrupt the religion of the sepoys. The sepoys thought that the British were converting them to Christians; henceforth, soldiers started the revolt against the company, which led to Mangal Pandey’s death for attacking the officers. Now, the soldiers were in agony, and the large numbers of people rebelled to make an end to the company
