The basics of creating depth in a two dimensional artwork starts from sketching. The simplest way of doing that is by using the following elements:
- Perspective is the most fundamental technique for creating depth. It means showing objects that are farther away from the viewer as smaller and closer together, while objects that are closer to the viewer appear larger and more spread out.
- Overlapping, which is placing objects in front of one another, can create a sense of space.
- Overlapping objects suggest that one object is closer to the viewer than the others, adding a sense of space between them.
- Objects that are closer to the viewer appear larger, while those that are farther away appear smaller.
- Adding height and depth to your artwork also helps give it a two dimensional feel. For example if you are painting a landscape from the perspective of a person stading on a hill, deeper areas will seem smaller and higher land will seem larger in size.
- Shading and color grading adds to the same effect of creating a two dimensional depth.
