Global warming refers to the long-term rise in Earth’s average surface temperature due to increased levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. These gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, trap heat from the sun and prevent it from escaping back into space, causing the planet to gradually warm over time.
The primary drivers of global warming are human activities that release large amounts of greenhouse gases, primarily through the burning of fossil fuels for energy, transportation, industry, and agriculture. As the global temperature rises, this can lead to climate change, including more frequent and intense extreme weather events, melting of glaciers and ice caps, sea level rise, and changes in weather patterns and ecosystems around the world.
Global warming is considered one of the most pressing environmental issues facing the world today, with scientific consensus that human-caused climate change is occurring and poses significant risks if left unaddressed. Efforts to mitigate and adapt to global warming, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to renewable energy sources, are active areas of research, policymaking, and public discourse.
