The Secret Rules of Soft Sounds

1. The Soft C Rule:

C makes the /s/ sound when followed by E, I, or Y

Examples: face, ice, circle, bicycle, fancy

2. The Soft G Rule:

G makes the /j/ sound when followed by E, I, or Y

Examples: page, giant, magic, gym, energy

A Quick Tip from a Teacher: “In my experience, kids remember this best by calling E, I, and Y the ‘softening’ letters. It gives them a powerful feeling to know the secret!”

Answer Key for Grown-Ups

Hello, amazing parent or teacher! Here are the answers to guide your learner.

Activity 1: Sort the Sound!

Soft Sound (/s/ or /j/) Hard Sound (/k/ or /g/)
center (/s/) game (/g/)
giant (/j/) cap (/k/)
city (/s/) gift (/g/) *
gem (/j/) crab (/k/)
cylinder (/s/)

*Note on “gift”: This is a common exception to the soft G rule. While it is followed by an ‘i’, it makes the hard /g/ sound. It’s a great word to introduce the idea that English has a few rule-breakers! You can explain it by saying, “This word is being a little tricky and not following the rule today.”

Activity 2: Complete the Sentence!

  1. giraffe (soft G)
  2. garden (hard G)
  3. face (soft C)
