By the time I arrived at the party, my friends had already left.
In this sentence, the past perfect tense “had left” indicates that the action of leaving happened before the time I arrived at the party.
The past perfect tense is used to describe an action that was completed before another past action or before a specific time in the past. It is formed using had + past participle.
Some other examples of sentences in the past perfect tense:
The students had studied for the exam before the teacher announced the test date.
The repair technician had fixed the computer by the time the customer picked it up.
She had finished her homework by the time her parents got home from work.
The team had won the championship before the coach announced his retirement.
