A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth positions itself between the Sun and the Moon, causing the Earth’s shadow to cover the Moon. This phenomenon can only take place during a full moon when the three celestial bodies are aligned.
Types of Lunar Eclipses
Total Lunar Eclipse: The entire Moon passes through the Earth’s umbra (the darkest part of its shadow), often giving it a reddish hue, commonly known as a “Blood Moon.”
Partial Lunar Eclipse: Only a portion of the Moon enters the Earth’s umbra while the rest remains illuminated by sunlight.
Penumbral Lunar Eclipse: The Moon passes through the Earth’s penumbra (the lighter part of its shadow), resulting in a subtle shading on the Moon’s surface.
Lunar eclipses are safe to view with the naked eye and can last for several hours, making them popular events for observation.
