Define Pun With Example

A pun is a figure of speech, a witty use of a word or phrase having more than one meaning or of sounding alike words with different meanings. An intriguing figure of speech that requires an intellectual and witty mind to create unique puns.

Different kinds of puns, such as:

1) Homophonic puns – The puns that use words with a homophonic nature, i.e., words sounding similar but having distinctly different meanings and spellings, and the punchline resides in them.

Example – “A bicycle can’t stand on its own because it is two-tired”. (two-tired homophonic to too tired).

2) Homographic puns – Identical spellings but different meanings and pronounciation.

Example – “My friend said, he will sell me a remote cell.” (“sell” and “cell”).

3) Homonymic puns – It involves words which are spelled and sound the same, yet have different meanings.

Example – “I used to be a banker, but I lost interest” (pun is interest).

4) Compund puns – Two punny words in one statement to blend the meanings and create a humorous pun.

Example – i. “I’m not scared of insect, but they bug me” (“scared” and “bug”).

ii. “Why did the clown hold the door open for everyone? He made a nice jester.” (“clown” and “jester”).
