    India celebrates its independence day on August 15 every year. Freedom Day reminds us of all the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters to liberate India from British rule. On August 15, 1947, India was declared independent of Britain and became the world’s largest democracy. On this day, the Prime Minister of India raises a flag at Red Fort and addresses the nation with a speech. Doordarshan broadcasts the entire event live on television. Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru held his first flag-raising ceremony on 15 August 1947.

    Britishers ruled India for nearly 200 years. Under British rule, people’s lives were miserable. The Indians were treated as slaves and had no right to say anything to them. Indian rulers were simply puppets in the hands of British officials. Indian soldiers were brutally treated in British camps, and farmers starved to death as they could not grow crops and had to pay heavy land taxes.

    Our freedom fighters are fighting for India’s Independence. Prominent leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Subash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rani Lakshmi Bai, Mangal Pandey, Dada Bhai Naoroji fought fearlessly against the Britishers. Many of them sacrificed their lives for the liberation of India from British rule. Their contribution and efforts are commemorated in the history of Indian Liberation.

    Why Celebrate Independence Day?

    India gained independence after years of struggle. India gained full independence from Britain and guaranteed full independence on 15 August 1947. That is why the day carries great significance in the hearts of all Indian citizens living in India or abroad. India celebrated 73 years of freedom on 15 August 2020. This day also reminds us of the struggles of freedom fighters and the lives they sacrificed for freedom. The pain that our heroes have gone through reminds us that the freedom we enjoy today is achieved by shedding the blood of human lakhs. It also evokes a sense of patriotism within all the citizens of India. It gives the present generation a better understanding of the problems of the people of that time and also of the Indian freedom fighters.

    Freedom Day creates a sense of patriotism among the people. It unites people and makes them feel that we are one nation with so many languages, religions and cultural heritage. Unity in division is the foundation and great power of India. We feel proud to be part of the world’s largest democracy, where power is in the hands of the common man.
