The tomato genome has been decoded! Plant genetics from 14 different countries, it has, in the past ten years to map the genetic make-up of the tomatoes and it turned out that tomatoes contain a 31,760 genes – which has about 7,000 more genes than humans!
The tomato genome, and is in fact closer to the potatoes. (These are two of the plants, parts of a 92 per cent of their DNA.) Why, a genome map of a tomato at all? The scientists hope that this information can be used to improve tomato breeding, tomato genome as an integral of interest, as well as a key to the understanding of the universal, the plant family to which it belongs, including potato, tobacco, plants, peppers, eggplants, and of the solanaceae family. The full findings of the study have been published in the journal Nature.
