  For centuries animal manure has been regarded as a “soil” builder because of its contribution to improving soil quality. Natural benefits can be achieved through the use of compost when using fertilizers and nutrients and time and placement follow good management practices. Compared to conventional fertilizers, well-fertilized manure in the soil has the potential to provide natural benefits including:

  Increase in soil carbon and low carbon levels

  Decreased soil erosion and water flow

  Decreased nitrate leaching

  Decreased energy demand for natural nitrogen (N) fertilizer
