With a complex and deeply troubling history attached to the entire topic, the origin of slavery in America can be dated back to the early 17th century. The British colony in America was responsible for bringing the first African slaves to America in 1619.
During the initial years, the Africans were treated as servants. Over time, practices changed and a law was passed to formally introduce slavery in America. These Africans were treated as private property and were deprived of basic human rights.
These slaves were being imported to work on the plantations in the colony. The slaves were transported across the Atlantic Ocean to fuel the economic interests of America and the British colonisers.
The legal framework seemed to tip in favour of slavery and established a strict law that defined and regulated slavery in all forms. This law enabled the owners to have an extensive amount of power over the enslaved.
Slavery is deeply ingrained in the American society, especially Souther America. The boom of the cotton industry in the early 19th century intensified the demand for cheap labour. This consolidated the institution of slavery.
Today’s America also battles with a blotted history of slavery and it’s ripples are still felt across states. Understanding the dark past is extremely important to work towards a better equitable society.
