The director of the archaeological excavation that led to the discovery of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro was Sir John Marshall. Sir John Marshall was a British archaeologist who served as the Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India from 1902 to 1928. Under his leadership, significant excavations were conducted at various sites in the Indian subcontinent, including Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, which are now recognized as major centers of the Indus Valley Civilization. Marshall’s work greatly contributed to the understanding and recognition of the Indus Valley Civilization as one of the world’s earliest urban civilizations.
