Evaporation is the process by which a liquid, such as water, changes into a gas or vapor state. It occurs when the molecules of a liquid gain enough energy to break free from the liquid’s surface and enter the surrounding atmosphere as gas molecules.
The process of evaporation is driven by the transfer of heat energy. When the temperature of a liquid increases, the average kinetic energy of its molecules also increases. As a result, some molecules near the surface gain enough energy to overcome the attractive forces holding them in the liquid phase. These molecules escape into the air as vapor, forming a gas phase above the liquid.
Evaporation takes place at the liquid’s surface and continues until the liquid is completely evaporated or until the concentration of vapor molecules in the surrounding atmosphere reaches a point of equilibrium with the liquid. Factors that influence the rate of evaporation include temperature, humidity, surface area, and airflow.
