How did Nationalism take place in India?
Indian Nationalism History
The revolt of 1857 and its aftermath increased political awareness among the Indians. This growing consciousness found its strongest voice among the English-educated intelligentsia that grew up in India’s major cities during the last three decades of the nineteenth century.
In India, the growth of nationalism took place in the second half of the 19th Century. India became United against foreign rule and decided to become independent. This could be achieved by a single feeling of nationalism.
Periodic Revolt took place after the great British uprising of 1857 in certain parts of India. The occurrence of these revolts made Indians confident, but on the other hand, the British suppressed this Revolt with at utmost cruelty. How this Revolt was suppressed made the Indians bolder and more courageous in their fight against the foreign rule.
During this period, the glorious past of India was rediscovered. Scholars and writers, through their writings and discoveries, made Indians proud of their glorious past. Social and religious reformers played a very important role; writers and poets also played a very positive and dynamic role. They aroused the hidden patriotic sentiments of the people. The press supported the Indian cause, which ultimately gave rise to the development of Nationalist literature. This literature spread the message of Patriotism and modern ideas of nationalism, democracy, and socialism.
