Founder of Brahmo Samaj and Its Significance

During the 19th century in India immense intellectual awakening of the people began to happen. This was because of the impact of Western education and thoughts that were propagated by the British. Also, some intellectual people of the society were very tired of the social evils that were prevalent during that time. They wanted to ban such social evils that were harmful to the people of the society.

Many leaders emerged during this time who guided India to the path of spiritual and intellectual enlightenment. One such leader was Raja Ram Mohan Roy, who was the founder of the Brahma Samaj. He had a deep love for the people of this country and dedicated his whole life to the upliftment of river people and aimed at social, religious, intellectual, and political growth.

He gathered like-minded youth and started the Brahma Samaj. Under this umbrella Association, these people worked to curb social evils like Sati child marriage and also promoted widow remarriage.

Earlier, Raja Ram Mohan Roy had also started the Atmiya Sabha in 1814. He cited the Hindu Holy text and ancient text to the people to make them understand that no religion propagated social evils.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a very intellectual person and had the knowledge and best composition of both East and West culture. He knew more than 12 languages such including Sanskrit, Arabic, English, Hindi, Bengali, Hebrew, Urdu, French, Latin, Greek, etc.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy established the Brahma Sabha with the main aim to purify the Hindu society and to teach the principle of monotheism, all the belief in one God.
