Bone marrow is soft and flexible tissue in the cavity of our bones, it belongs to the lymphatic system. It is highly vascular, i.e., it is supplied richly with large number of blood vessels. In our body, main function of this marrow is to produce blood cells. Research claim that, on an average, bone marrow produces hundred of millions of new blood cells.
Bone marrow is classified into two categories:
· Red Marrow
Red marrow is confined mostly to skeletal system bones of the skull, pelvis, spine, ribs, sternum, shoulder blades, and near the point of attachment of the long bones of the arms and legs.
· Yellow Marrow
Yellow marrow consists primarily of fat cells. It has poor vascular supply and is composed of hematopoietic tissue that has become inactive. Yellow marrow is found in spongy bones and in the shaft of long bones.
Moreover, the bone marrow also helps in remove of dead cells in the system. It has both vascular and non-vascular component. Disease can impact the body’s bone marrow. Low blood cell production is often a result of damage or disease. To correct, a bone marrow transplant may be performed so that the body can produce enough healthy blood cells.
