  What are the functions of blood types, and how do they affect health?

  The main function of blood is to transport nutrients and oxygen and eliminate wastes from the cells of the body. The various other functions of blood are the distribution of heat, defense, and maintaining homeostasis.

  The functions are varied and include membrane structure, transport, receptor, adhesion, enzyme activity, complement components, complement regulation and glycocalyx formation.

  If you receive blood from a donor whose blood cells contain antigens your body doesn’t recognize, your immune system may attack the donated red blood cells. The results could be life-threatening. Your blood type allows providers to determine which blood types are safe for you to receive.
