<div>The Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place on April 13, 1919, in Amritsar, Punjab, India, during the British colonial rule. It was a brutal incident in which British troops under the command of Brigadier General Reginald Dyer opened fire on a crowd of unarmed Indian civilians who had gathered at the Jallianwala Bagh public garden for a peaceful protest against the repressive Rowlatt Act.

The Rowlatt Act was a law enacted by the British government that allowed for the arrest and detention of Indians without trial, severely limiting civil liberties. On that fateful day, thousands of people, including men, women, and children, had gathered in Jallianwala Bagh to protest peacefully and listen to speeches denouncing the Rowlatt Act.

General Dyer ordered the soldiers to open fire on the crowd. The troops continued to shoot for about 10 minutes until they ran out of ammunition. The exact number of casualties is still disputed, but it is estimated that hundreds of people were killed and thousands were injured in the massacre. The people trapped in the enclosed garden had limited means of escape, and many were killed or injured while trying to flee.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre sparked outrage across India and around the world, leading to widespread condemnation of the British colonial rule. It significantly intensified the demand for independence and played a crucial role in mobilizing public support for the Indian independence movement.
