Mandalas were created in the service of one of the world’s great religions, Buddhism. A mandala is a complex abstract design that is usually circular in form. Mandalas generally have one identifiable center point, from which emanates an array of symbols, shapes and forms.<div>
Since Mandela art mainly deals with symmetry, you will require a couple of geometry equipments.
You will need a protractor, geometry compass, ruler, pencil and eraser, a sheet of paper and a fine marker (preferably smudge-proof). For a touch of colour, you can also use sketch pens, water colours, or colour pencils.

Requirement for mandala
Mandala is a circular abstract form of art that is made by a combination of several geometric patterns like floral patterns, lines, triangles, and many more. Now let us understand the basic requirements to learn mandala. As a beginner, you need the following items:
- Base – Thick White or
black paper - Measurement tools –
Scale, Protractor, and compass. Apart from this, you can make paper
stencils to mark the lines. - Drawing tools – Pencil,
fineliner, or any colored or black pens. Make sure that your pen is smudge-free. - Painting tools – If you
want your mandala monochromatic, you don’t need color but if you want a
colored mandala then you can use watercolor or pastel color. Make sure to
keep the background light if you want to draw the mandala design using
black pens.
How to self learn mandala
Yes, mandalas can be self-learned with practice. Now as a beginner just start with making circles using a compass. Understand the measurement efficiently by using a scale and protractor. The thing that matters a lot in drawing a mandala is the measurement and the space that you need for each geometric design. Now let’s understand it step by step.
- Take a thick white or
black paper. The thick paper ensures less damage to your paper while using
a compass. - If you want to keep it
simple, then draw circles using a compass by increasing its length slowly
in each circle. If you want to have a colorful mandala, use watercolor as
a background wash then use a pencil to sketch the outlines. - Now use a scale and
protractor to draw lines of equal size and distance. This ensures the
mandala looks elegant - Now you can use a dark
fineliner or pen to highlight the lines and finally use patterns to fill
the mandala.
Practicing this step daily can make you make the perfect mandala in no time.
