    3(y – 4) + 2 = 5(y + 1) – 3

    First, we’ll distribute the 3 and 5 on the left and right sides:

    3y – 12 + 2 = 5y + 5 – 3

    Next, we’ll combine like terms on each side:

    3y – 10 = 5y + 2

    Now we’ll subtract 3y from both sides to isolate the y term:

    -2y – 10 = 2

    Finally, we’ll add 10 to both sides and divide both sides by -2 to solve for y:

    y = -6

    Therefore, the solution is y = -6.
